Why Europe needs research spending

On 6 April 2005 the European Commission made a proposal for a spending programme for research and development from 2007 to 2013. This new 7 th Framework Programme in line with the Commission's proposal on the overall budget for this period, envisages a doubling of EU funds for research and development.

The programme will focus on achieving three main goals:

•  to boost Europe's economic growth and competitiveness, because Europe is suffering from low economic growth (about 2% in Eurozone);

•  to strengthen European human resources, because long-term unemployment is increasing in Europe and labour markets continue to deteriorate (average unemployment rate in „old Europe“ being about 9,1%);

•  to invest at European level to add value, because modern research activities are often so specific and expensive that they require cooperation across national boundaries and funding above national research programmes.

More details about the 7 th Framework Programme are available here.

TEL-ME-MOR project will also contribute to this new programme by defining the research areas in librarianship that need to be addressed by the European Commission.

Researchers in Europe 2005

On 8 June 2005 the European Commission launched a Europe-wide initiative “Researchers in Europe 2005”. The campaign aims to promote better awareness of the exciting multi-faceted lives and careers of researchers – ordinary people with a passion for science, without whom our society's progress would not be possible.

A wide range of activities will take place between June and November 2005, all designed to improve public understanding of the key role played by researchers in our society, and to attract young people to careers in science. Events include open-door days, exhibitions and theatre productions, with the highlight being “European Researchers Night” on 23 September, where events will be held simultaneously in cities and regions across Europe. The launch will be attended by the European Commissioner, Janez Potočnik and the Luxembourg Minister for Research, François Biltgen.

i2010 : European Information Society 2010

The European Commission adopted on 1 June the initiative i2010: European Information Society 2010 to foster growth and jobs in the information society and media industries. i2010 is a comprehensive strategy for modernising and deploying all EU policy instruments to encourage the development of the digital economy: regulatory instruments, research and partnerships with industry. The Commission will in particular promote high-speed and secure broadband networks offering rich and diverse content in Europe.

It is the first Commission initiative to be adopted under the EU's renewed Lisbon strategy. i2010 focuses on the most promising sector of the EU economy: ICT account for 40% of Europe's productivity growth and for 25% of EU GDP growth. Member States are asked to define National Information Society Priorities in their National Reform Programmes in mid-October 2005 to contribute to the objectives of the new strategy.

Further information on i2010 can be found here.
